Although the current government has made legislatively to Spain in one of the most socially advanced countries following the adoption of several laws that recognize the right of homosexuals and transsexuals to marry and even adopt children from same-sex couples , and while gays are more accepted now by the English company, transsexuals are having it far more complicated. Living
trapped in a body with a sexual anatomy that does not match that identifies psychologically and socially, creates a conflict of identity, which adds the subject of much ridicule by a society that neither understands nor accepts their condition.
According to a study by the Foundation for Gender Identity, in Spain there are a total of 31,938 transsexuals, but so far only 2,826 are diagnosed as such. Therefore, many transgender people claiming to talk about the issue because it is the only way to know and therefore accept this situation to normal and socially.
In 1983 reassignment surgery for sex change was no longer an offense, yet marriage was not easy. In 2002 they won two actions before the Prosecution and from there they could marry.
In 2006 the government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero approved a provision that allowed to perform sex change operations in publicly funded hospitals.
was in March 2007 when the English parliament approved the law on gender identity, which allows transsexual people to modify the name and sex on their identification documents without having to undergo an operation or judicial proceedings.
The increase of information and different social advances and legislation on transsexualism in Spain, has led to an increase in the number of children who go to the doctor to ask about a sex change operation. They claim to have known from an early age living in the wrong body.
However, a minor can not be operated in a public hospital. After passing through a series of psychological tests which ensure that you are in a conflict of gender identity, and other medical procedures, you must wait to turn eighteen years old to be operated for free. So some decide to go to private clinics to stop being trapped in a body that is not theirs, as soon as possible.
Despite progress there is still a long way to go. The group of transsexuals now wants to make clear that it is not a psychiatric problem and therefore struggle to get the catalog of Mental Disorders.
